Childrens Concert in Port Stephens

Sunday 8 September 2013
4:00 am
Children of the Port Stephens area are in for a rare classical treat as Orchestra Nova take to the stage to present their annual children’s programme.
The orchestra will perform St. Michael’s Church Hall in Nelson Bay on Sunday 8th September, starting at 2pm. All are welcome.
Now in its 22nd year, Orchestra Nova - the Hunter and Newcastle’s only community orchestra - continues to deliver up to four programmes per year featuring well-known popular and classical music for the community’s enjoyment.
The orchestra’s September concerts will present a selection of well-known and hum-worthy tunes, such as the Can-Can, Gabriel’s Oboe, Hallelujah Chorus and the Muppet Show medley.
The performance will also feature a special guest narrator James Walker and tuba player Rowan Taylor for a presentation of ‘Tubby the Tuba’. The popular narrative tune composed in the late 1940s (and later spawning an award-winning animated short-film), tells the story of Tubby, an orchestral tuba, who, with the help of a friendly frog, takes on the orchestra in a quest to play more than just the bass lines.
The orchestra’s current musical director and conductor for the children’s concert programme, Robin Fischle, knows a thing or two about orchestral performance, having formerly played French horn for the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, including a performance at the opening of the Sydney Opera House.
“It gives me great pleasure to be presenting this wonderful programme of music,” said Robin. “It’s important that as a community orchestra we appeal to the whole spectrum of people who attend our concerts, including the younger folks,” he added.
Both concerts will also feature a performance by the Do Re Mi children’s choir.
The musicians playing in Orchestra Nova range in age and experience and are from many walks of life including students, teachers, doctors, engineers and retirees.
