John Nottle - Music Director of Orchestra Nova
John Nottle - conductor, composer and music educator, recently relocated to New South Wales from
Adelaide . In February, 2009 he took up the position of Music Director-Orchestra Nova. At the beginning of 2008 he was appointed Director of Ensembles and Orchestral Studies, Central Coast Conservatorium and Music Director of the Youth Orchestra. He is also active as a guest conductor.
John initially studied orchestral conducting at The Victorian College of the Arts with John Hopkins. He furthered his conducting studies in Europe with the internationally renowned conductors Tsung Yeh, and Robert Schaffli, both of whom are highly regarded in Europe and the
United States for their commitment and encouragement of emerging orchestra conductors. As a result of his studies he was awarded a concert with the Kromeriz Chamber Orchestra,
Czech Republic , which led to further concerts with various Czech and Polish orchestras. John is also highly experienced in conducting community and educational symphony orchestras, wind ensembles and brass bands. His orchestral repertoire extends from the Baroque through to the late C20th.
In November 2008, John was Music Director for the opera Amahl and the Night Visitors composed in 1951 by Menotti and featured students and tutors of The Central Coast Conservatorium, the Central Coast Philharmonic Choir and the Conservatorium Youth Orchestra. The performances were enthusiastically received. In 2009 he will direct performances of the opera Brundibar which was given its first performances by Jewish children in the Terezin concentration camp during World War II. John’s affinity with contemporary Australian music has led to the European premiere of Richard Meale’s Symphony with the Karlovy Vary Philharmonic Orchestra, CZ. He later performed this work to high acclaim with the Sudecky Philharmonic Orchestra,
Poland . John also presented the South Australian premiere of Nigel Butterley’s 70th Birthday Commission ‘Never This Sun, This Watcher’ in the presence of the composer. The performance of this work secured the Orchestras Australia 2006 National Schools Orchestra Award.
John Nottle studied composition at The Victorian College of the Arts, and then continued his studies at a post-graduate level at Elder Conservatorium,
University of Adelaide . His music is published by Boosey and Hawkes, London and Sounds Australia. His work, Taxi! for Trumpet and Piano is on the NSW list of recommended works for HSC and has been chosen as a test piece for the 2009 Australian national brass band competitions. Mid-City Aria for Clarinet and Piano was the most performed Australian composition at the 2005 South Australian SACE Year 12 Solo Performance exams. His work for orchestra The Celebrations of Marguarita will be performed later this year by Sinfonia the Orchestra of the Mid North Coast. John has recently been commissioned by Gosford City Council to compose an orchestral work reflecting the unique qualities which define the New South Wales Central Coast.

The musicians playing in Orchestra Nova range from students to people of all ages and from many walks of life including teachers, doctors, engineers and retired people.
We currently have postions avaliable for Strings, Bassoons and Horns. Though anyone who is able to play an orchestral instrument at a reasonable standard is welcome to join the orchestra.
